Types of Pewter

• The third grade of pewter was known as “lay metal” and used to produce items apart from those of used for food and drink. This type of pewter was a combination of tin and l5% lead.

These three main types of pewter had been used until the 20th century with slight changes. The most important change related to the modern pewter which contains at least 90% tin.
Moreover, lead has been replaced with antimony, bismuth and copper. There is a big difference between antique pewter and modern pewter items based on weight, look, and touch. In other words, pewter antiques are heavier and affected by oxidation. That is why antique pewter has a grey color and tarnish faster.

When it comes to the metal proportions used to create the pewter alloy, we must mention that the European casting alloy contains approximately 94% tin, 5% antimony and the rest of 1% is copper. However, Asian pewter alloy contains approximately 97,5% tin, 1,5% antimony and the rest of 1% is copper. This combination makes the pewter alloy softer and it is used in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.
