Chargers and dishes difference

Nowadays, many people seem to be confused regarding the differences between chargers and dishes and our purpose is to clarify all misunderstandings based on historical data and information.

The chargers have a wonderful look when manufactured from pewter alloy, since this mixture of metals is malleable.

However, the antique pewter chargers have appeared during the 16th centuries and since then the antique pewter chargers are used exclusively for their decorative purpose.

Before the 14th century, there was no use of the expression “trencher plate” in the sizing records from 1438, but there is a clear distinction between dishes and chargers. In the modern days we use the term “dish” to signify a big, but under 18 inches plate; while a plate over 18 inches we call it “charger”.

Based on the modern terms, we have decided to look for reliable information within the 1438 sizing and found the following definitions:

• Chargeours – the smallest weighting 2 and ¾ pounds while the largest 7 pounds (between 14 ½ inches and 20 ½ inches).
• Platers – the smallest weighting 1 and 5/6 pounds while the largest 2 and ½ pounds (between 12 inches and 13 ¾ inches).
• Dishes – the smallest weighting 5/6 pounds while the largest 1 and ½ pounds (between 8 ½ inches and 11 ¼ inches).

Until the 17th century, the weight of all these items was increased with at least 4 pounds each and a maximum of 10 pounds for the dishes. The first appearance of “trencher plates” occurred in 1772 where the following were mentioned:

• Dishes – Measured between 11 inches and 18 inches with a least weight of 1 ½ pounds and a maximum weight of 20 pounds.
• Trencher Plates - The sizing started from 7 5/8 inches up to 9 ¾ inches with various styles: Spanish plate style, broad rims, narrow rims, have a weight of 1 ¼ each.

Therefore, we might say that between 1691 and 1772 slight changes occurred in terms of weight and size.

However, each of us is free to use the term they considered the best: use dish for anything under 18 inches and charger for anything over; or adopt the “charger plate” or “charger dish” terms for items over 16 ½ inches.

In the end, we might conclude that the antique pewter chargers and dishes might have changed in the last centuries in terms of style and design, but their use has remained the same.
