Due to the wide variety of pewter marks discovered, there has been established the following classification between five main categories of marks: touch marks, quality marks, hallmarks, catalogue numbers and labels. A pewterer has the possibility to use one or more of these types of marks and the more types he uses, the better the pewter piece will be identified.

In this way, there you can definitely observe drawings and photographs of pewterers’ marks and learn their characteristics. However, you should look for the latest volumes published so that all information provided is correct.

Based on the pewterers’ marks you will be able to determine the origin of the antique pewter article and appreciate the true value of each work of art made of pewter. The pewterers’ marks have been imposed since the 15th century, and the antique pewter articles that do not have such marks, may have been produced earlier.
