The third category of pewter marks are the ownership marks. After the pewter piece was purchased by a customer, he/she sometimes requested to the pewterer to apply the initials especially on sadware. In most cases the ownership mark consisted of two or three initials aligned and occasionally it appeared as a triad where the higher initial represented the surname and the other two initials the forename for the husband and wife.
Moreover, some owners decided to engrave crests or shields on the pewter piece purchased, while in the 18th century pewterers had their own unique crowned pewter marks. In this way, it was much easier to identify the pewterer.
Likewise, the church pewter alloy and the pewter items produced there are engraved with the church’s name. In this way, each town, each church and each pewterer had its own pewter marks, be it ownership marks or labels.
