The capacity of liquids British measures

Nowadays, there are various books and researches made on pewter measures and the discoveries made are quite impressive. One of the best examples is written by Carl Ricketts and John Douglas called “Marks and Markings of Weights and Measured of the British Isles”.

The conclusions drawn from such researches help up to understand the traditional methods used to create antique pewter measures and the differences between the types of pewter measures: British measures, American measures and double volute measures.

The pewter collectors who have purchased pewter measures or who collect only pewter measures should know how to measure capacity.
Therefore, we may say that measuring capacity is not a difficult task but when it comes to the time interpret the results this might cause problems.

Having this in mind, all antique pewter vessels and the modern pieces should be measure because our eyes are not precise enough to distinguish all kinds of measurements. Thus, in order to avoid confusion or mistakes, all pewter vessels must be measured.
Sometimes the measurement made can be accurate, but differences may also appear. The differences may be either under-capacity or over-capacity.

Back then, it was clear that the people did not agree with the legislation in force which requested the removal of this “strange” capacity in 1845 through the ACT 5 & 6 Wil IV c 63.
But, the trade and the public frustrated the Parliament’s intentions and continued to use these pewter measures.
