John Yates

Furthermore, the most important member of the Yates family, John Yates, had a successful life and business. Various partnerships were created where Yates was one of the main associates and their pewter products were famous at global level.

John Yates (1788 – 1881)

Moreover, when it comes to John Yates it is supposed he was born in 1788 and during his life he was as well a spoon maker but he started his business much younger, when he was only 20 years old. In this way, during the 1830’s he started various partnerships with Thomas Birch and Lucas Spooner, from where the hallmark Y B & S was created.

These pewterers marks were studied for a long time in order to determine exactly which member of the Yates family created some antique pewter articles.

Y B & S partnership

The 1930’s was a difficult period for the Y B & S partnership since Spooner died in 1839 and in the same period John’s son James joined their business. However, the new enterprise was then called Yates & Birch. In 1857 Lucas Spooner died and John Yates continued his business under his full name.

In 1881 John Yates died and his business was sold to other pewterers, but continued to create pewter antique articles under the name of “John Yates” until the merger in 1902 with Gaskel; and Chambers.

During these three successive businesses which took place between 1829 and 1902, there was a wide range of antique pewter articles created, but they were mostly focused on to types of pewter items: the bellied measures and beer mugs.
The beer mugs were manufactured in different sized varying between one gallon and until very small fractions.

The good news is that today some of these Yates antique pewter beer mugs and bellied measures are still available for sale and will look wonderful within your pewter collection.
